Deepish Thoughts pre-Valentine’s Day

I have successfully been ignoring Valentine’s Day for years, usually with no argument from whichever significant other I was with at the time. I think the last time I really celebrated it was in high school, when I gave my boyfriend-of-4-months homemade cookies with M&Ms and he gave me…a Victoria’s Secret gift card for $30.

This did not go over well with my family.

My grandma actually asked me if the idea was that I was supposed to buy something sexy and then try it on for him. There’s a conversation I never want to have again. Just writing that makes me cringe, in fact. And, in his defense, he was pretty clueless about the entire exchange of gifts. The gift card had been his mother’s suggestion. I could see the inappropriateness of it even then, and the whole thing was awkward between the two of us. He sort of threw the card at me and I think I ended up buying some lotion with it.

Another charming thing my grandma once said to me when I was a sophomore in high school, since we’re on the subject: I was wearing a different boyfriend’s letter jacket, feeling oh-so-cool, and she looked me up and down and said “What did you have to do to get that?”

It’s so endearing when your grandma thinks you’re a total floozy and isn’t afraid to talk about it.

Wow - I didn't know your grandma was that bold. I still don't get Victoria Secret gifts from my husband! In our house, tiomorrow is Thad's birthday, not Valentine's Day. We have had an ongoing "discussion" since our courtship as to whether or not he was still responsible for giving me Valentine's when it's his birthday. Since he will be out of town tomorrow, we are celebrating Valentine's Day with my family. Interestingly enough, I must be winning the discussion since I have 2 cards to open tomorrow and I received 2 dowzen tulips today. He is learning!

I am truly afraid to read Nana's response to this. Nana, please don't scar me any more than that post already did.

Oh, happy bday to Thad! And happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Rob and I will be celebrating by fighting over the remote and who is going to feed the cats. CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE?

Was said gift giver one with the initials of SR? If so, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth. Of course, I don't blame him. That's happening to me a lot these days, thanks to the alien life force taking over my body.

Happy Valentine's Day! I made Bill some red velvet cupcakes for the occasion. He's leaving for a long ski weekend tomorrow, so I will be eating the 'cakes. Give and take...that's what love is all about.

That's...rather horrifying.

No wonder Rob doesn't want you to blog about him. I'm joining his club. My memory of suggestions and advice to my grandchildren was, "Research" and "Don't turn a corner or curve with you foot on the brake." I'm sure when I saw the letter-jacket I probably said, "Why did he gave that to you?" which sounds much more grandmotherly than your version of my reaction.I can't remember being as crass as that blog sounded but then since my brain in turning to mush I don't remember a lot of things.

I love you, Nana, but I am sticking to my story!
