Why?

A conversation with my three-year-old neighbor, D:

Me: D, the baby is moving. Do you want to feel?

D (with a cursory hand swipe at my stomach): Why is the baby in there?

Me: Because she's still cooking. And when she's ready she'll come out.

D: What is she cooking?

Me: Oh, hmmm...maybe cooking was not the right word...

D: Why is she cooking?

Me: Well, I mean, she's still growing. She has to get bigger before she comes out.

Silence.

D: Why is she cooking?

Me: Because she's hungry. She's making a snack.

Of course the kid is confused. She's baking. She's in an oven, not on a stove. I hope you haven't ruined him for life.

Cute :o) I explained it to Emma once that it was like making chocolate pudding. You know...you put all the ingredients but together, but it isn't ready right away, you have to wait until it is just perfect before it is done :o). My poor kid is going to be even more screwed up though since she was a IVF baby - oh boy - what til she hears about how those babies are made!

D strikes me as an inquisitive child. A persistent, inquisitive child. We can only hope that D will eventually develop an interest in acid rain:

"If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is, "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is, "Probably because of something you did."
