Foiled again

I went to the doctor yesterday. It was just for a check-up, so they took my blood pressure, monitored my heart beat, weighed me, and...here was the potentially exciting part...measured my height. I know this is ridiculous, but whenever someone measures my height (because it happens so often), I get a sudden rush of hope like maybe, just maybe, I've grown. I will be 30 years old this year. If I've grown, up is not the direction. And although I am well aware of this, my ability to delude myself wins out every time.

"How tall am I?" I asked the possibly mute 14-year-old medical assistant. I think she was a little thrown off by my exuberance, but she gamely gave me the answer.

Alas. Still 5'4".

Pretty sure I as 5'4" in the 3rd grade. Trust me, being super-tall isn't easy either.

You were probably that height when you were 17. What did you think was going to happen in 13 years. If you are reading this in a bitter tone you are right---try 5'0". I danced with every short man in the military during WWII--yuk!

You have several things to rejoice about, with regards to this post. 1) The average height for American women is 5 feet, 3.7 inches. So you're taller than average!
2) You're American. In the Netherlands, you would be 4 inches shorter than average (yes, the dutch women are on average 5-8 - good god!)
4) Pant inseams fit you - you can always hem, but it's very difficult to add (though the tailor at my dry cleaner once did a magical "add job")
3) You're one of those people that "reads" taller than your actual height. If I had been asked to guess, I would have said 5-6, 5-7. So you're larger than life. And how often do you hear that?!

How tall is that in centemeters? You see, I'm pro-Metric. Come this fall, I'm punching straight ticket Metric Party! By the way, it was a balmy 22 degrees C in Chicago today. Gotta love the spring weather!

It amuses me that you are still rounding up when it comes to your height. You have not hit 5'4" and you know it.

Ahem, LIZ. I am 5'4"! You're just mad because you're shorter than me and your feet are bigger.

Your height draws the largest response, most interest ever(?) on the blog. Maybe I can be a guest blogger about being 5'10". I can write about how I used to be 5'11".

Wait. Does this mean that I'll eventually shrink to 6'5" or even (GASP) 6'4"? Oh, the humanity.
